New Study Proves What We Know About Horses From Experience
The profession of Equine Guided Education (EGE) is founded upon the fact that horses sense and perfectly mirror human emotions. Those of us who work with horses on a daily basis are attuned to all the subtle nuances of the horse’s behavior. We know from years and years of experience that horses are more in touch with human emotions than most of the humans who have them. And, now, I’ve just read about a recent study that establishes this fact scientifically.
According to an article posted on theatlantic.com it has been shown that, “Horses can read human emotions, often in uncannily accurate ways,” thereby as the article asserts, “alerting us to our sadness or nervousness, sometimes before we’ve even consciously registered it.” (https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/02/how-horses-read-human-emotions/471264/?utm_source=atlfb)
In fact, horses know when there is illness in a human sometimes before the human does. I experienced this when working with a woman several years ago. When the herd came near her, every single horse immediately went to the ground. I knew something was terribly wrong, but I didn’t know what. I asked the participant if she had any health issues. She said that she wasn’t aware of any health problems. However, she was so affected by the horses’ behavior that when the weekend workshop was over she scheduled an appointment with her doctor. The appointment revealed she had breast cancer. Fortunately, she found it early enough to save her life.
The same atlantic.com article states, “Domestic horses respond to the tiniest change in tone of voice, quality of touch, or stiffness of their rider’s body. The equine ability to read human emotion through sound and touch is exquisite. But horses can also read the expression on a person’s face…” (https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/02/how-horses-read-human-emotions/471264/?utm_source=atlfb)
